providing a family the dignity of a safe and secure place to live.
In 2007 our daughter Lucia was born to a Quiche Maya woman in Mazatenango, Guatemala. Five days later we began the process of adopting and bringing Lucy home to our family, which we were able to do when she was 8 months old.
When Lucy was five, we traveled to remote southwestern Guatemala to find her birth mother. With the help of friends and Lucy's Guatemalan godfather, Victor, we were able to spend a day with with her birth mom. It was a day that changed all our lives.
We learned that the birth mother and her three small boys, Lucy's half-brothers—both malnourished and lacking even the basic resources to attend school—live in a shack with a partial tin roof and no proper walls. They sleep together on a pallet adjacent to their open cooking fire. The family's meager income comes from a husband who spends much of the year cutting cane in other parts of the country.
Victor and others have helped us stay in touch with Lucy's birth mom, but sending occasional money for food and supplies is not enough.
Beginning last year, our children began saving money to help build a home for her. They held bake sales and lemonade stands; their friends did too. And we reached out to friends, family and neighbors who responded with great openness of heart and generosity. The story unfolded differently than we expected, as you will learn in the "News" section. But over 100 individual donors helped us raise nearly $12,000! In July 2015 we purchased land for multiple homes, and in August we broke ground on the first project. If you would like to help with similar programs, please use"Donate" button in the top menu.

We've created this site so you can all learn about progress we're making. Now we'll shift to showing you what we've done in Guatemala with your help!
